A new experience!

Normally, I try not to speak of personal things, even though I probably should.I just had to share this experience..
I've been having problems with my lower back for years, pulling on patients has decided to cash in.I try to bear pain, tough it out, blah, blah, blah..., I see the Dr. and they suggest this....Well, yesterday I had a real treat.I had an MRI....
Being an Xray Tech,I know a good deal about it, even though I've not done those types of xrays.
The first part of the test is a series of questions. I passed that test....wooohoooo...
Yesterday was my do it day...Such great Technologist at the center, one which(now graduated) was a student of mine. She told me what she was going to do, which was basically put me in a hole in the wall...lol..I told her that I WAS claustraphobic, BUT, I'd had many knee MRIs'..So I'd give it a try....So here we go, I'm going to do this thing.
She asks me what type of music, I answer and away I go(head first) into the tunnel. For some reason I chose to open my eyes on the way in.....BIG NO NO! Was I going to freak or what? LOL..Not quite but almost... My head and upper body were in when I threw my right leg up in the air and firmly said HOOOOLD UP, NOOOOO WAY... actually, I think I kicked the machine....She pushed a button and drove me out. What a relief ..I was out.....lol..Smiling, but nervous as hec, I told her I'd give it another try with my eyes in the back of my head...and of course, no sedation!
I said "now, I know what my second scary thing to do is"... She then told me that I was almost through the tunnel....and that my head is out of the scanner, on the other side, at the first part of the exam.
So we precede on with my eyes closed...everything was really tight ,but I was ok...After a few seconds,I was able to feel sunlight..there was a window behind my head....wooohoooo, I made it through this hurdle..
I was just waiting for the exam to start, still thinking that I'm in a coffin or something...here comes shaking and baking....and what a noise...(jack hammer fits it well)
While lying there a huge magnet is scanning and taking 3D xrays...really awesome xrays I 'd like to add.So what's the baking? Apparently, on Lumbar spine(lower back) the Gantry heats up where the patient feels as if they are in a tanning bed....wooohooo..(Am I getting a tan?)Maybe? The table does move you back completely in the tunnel to finish the exam..I knew I was in there, I could feel it..I just kept thinking of other things... I was in there for 20 minutes , perhaps longer...what an experience. So many thoughts racing in my head...I'll never question again why one would want sedation for these scans....LOL.. Lesson learned....LOL...

You are so brave! I hope the reason for your pains was found.

Thank you very much.I'm sure they will find out what's going on.I'm supposed to get the results today or early next week..I hope that I will not need any more of those xrays...lol...

I loved your post! I'm a nurse and always hear stories of how stressful it is. Your explaination is golden..I hope the results are what you want them to be, and maybe some treatment to relieve your back pain! I'll be thinking of you!

Thank you so much Deb. During the entire of my scan, I was thinking about all of the patients that I've walked to MRI after their Diagnostic Xray. So many times asking myself why do they need sedation.... I know why now, first hand, ...lol

I've found I'm a much better nurse than I am a patient! lol
